Longview Public Schools seeks community feedback

district seeks inputLongview Public Schools wants to hear what the community has to say about the Nov. 7 bond which did not reach the 60 percent supermajority requirement.

The request for tax dollars to replace three aging elementary schools, renovate the preschool program building, and add safety enhancements in the district reached 57.77 percent yes votes. While the measure is still fresh in the minds of residents, the district is gathering feedback on-line and in two public meetings.

Public input sessions with Supt. Dan Zorn are planned for Dec. 5 at Northlake Elementary School, 2210 Olympia Way and on Dec. 6 at Mint Valley Elementary School, 2745-38th Ave.  Both events begin at 6 p.m.

In addition, all community members are encouraged to participate in an on-line Thoughtexchange process starting Dec. 4 at 5pm in which thoughts about the facilities issues can be shared. In this process, participants can leave thoughts, review the thoughts of others and star the thoughts that are most meaningful to them. The process can be visited repeatedly and results will be available immediately to the district and to participants. Thoughtexchange will only be available Dec. 4-15.

These feedback opportunities will allow the district valuable information as it revisits facilities needs later this winter.

News from the Nurse: Vision and hearing screening

vision testDistrict Nurse Lisa Lyons reminds us that it’s vision and hearing screening time for elementary students and 7th graders. Mrs. Lyons says, “No news is good news, but if you receive a referral letter, please take it seriously and follow up with a vision or hearing specialist, not just your regular physician.”

Welcome back 2017-2018

Hello Comets,

As the summer winds down, we are eagerly anticipating the first day of school! We are looking forward to seeing all of our students, and would like to take a moment to remind Kessler Elementary School’s families that school starts on Wednesday, August 30, 2017.  Our offices will be open prior to this, beginning on Wednesday, August 23, 2017.

On Tuesday, August 22nd, the Kessler staff will mount a big, yellow school bus and tour the neighborhood. We want to connect with families, and we’ll be passing out treats to kids. The bus tour will be from 3:30-5:30.

On Tuesday, August 29th, parents and students can come meet teachers from 3:30 to 4:30. Students can bring their supplies at that time too. If you do not yet have supplies, no worry; we have enough to get your student through the first week of school. If you are unable to provide school supplies please contact our parent liaison, Alisa Shipley

We are excited to see everyone soon! Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

Go, Comets!

Kindergartners to Start Smart for school success

The 2017-2018 school year begins on Wednesday, August 30 but the district’s incoming kindergartners will Start Smart by transitioning gradually to their school experience.

Kindergarten start up scheduleKindergarten students will not be attending school August 30-September 1, 2017. Instead, individual “get to know me” meetings will be scheduled with students, families, and teachers. Kindergarten families will be contacted by their elementary school to schedule their appointment on one of these three days. At this meeting, students will meet their teacher and see their classroom.

The following week, September 5-8, kindergartners will be attending half days, either morning or afternoon, in small groups. This will support students as they get to know their teacher and peers, and learn daily routines. Northlake and Columbia Heights kindergartners who ride the school bus will be transported to and from school on these half days.  Columbia Valley Gardens, Mint Valley, and Robert Gray students who ride the school bus will be transported one way only.  Morning kindergartners will ride to school on the bus and families will pick-up at mid-day. Families will drop afternoon kindergartners off at mid-day and students will ride the school bus home.  Kessler, Olympic, and St. Helens are not served by buses, and families will ensure their student gets to and from school.

Kindergartners will attend school full days beginning September 11.
